Elegant is the word for cats. Consider some other members of the family, (the African lion, the Bengal tiger and, perhaps the most beautiful of all cats, the snow leopard, who lives in the world's highest mountains. Unfortunately, some of these magnificent beasts are disappearing from their natural haunts. Our only hope of not losing them forever is through the work pursued by several zoos, who breed the animals in captivity.
There is no likelihood that our domestic cats will disappear; their problem is the opposite one. There are far too many cats, and always more on the way. So there will be no difficulty obtaining a cat or kitten if you want one. Throughout the United States, Humane Societies, the A.S.P.C.A., and like organizations are taking temporary care of thousands of cats, hoping they will be offered permanent homes.
Of course if your kitten comes from a mother cat you already know, you will have some idea how healthy or easily trained your kitten will be. But it will not necessarily be like its parents, any more than children are. For cats are highly individual creatures.
You can also buy a cat or kitten from a pet shop. There you will have a choice of many kinds and colors: white, red, blue, cream or smoky, calico or tortoise shell, long-haired or short-haired, cats .with kinky tails, and cats with no tail at all.
The fancy members of the family such as Siamese, Persian, Burmese, Abyssinian, or Russian Blue come with long pedigrees and cost a lot of money. The cat does not care about its pedigree, but if you plan to breed a 'purebred cat you must keep the papers.
Wherever you get your kitten, beware of runny noses or a sickly look. You will be much happier with your pet if it is healthy and playful. A sick kitten needs much extra care,' and you will. be brokenhearted if it doesn't make it.
