Choosing Your Snake

You are here: Reptiles & Amphibians > Snakes > Choosing Your Snake

As pets, snakes are not likely to be satisfactory if you are looking for affection and friendliness. Some snakes tolerate being handled, and some show awareness of the person who feeds them. However, one well-known snake expert tells the story of a man who thought his rattler knew him but found it depended on which jacket he wore. Apparently the snake recognized one particular coat but reacted as though the man were a stranger when he wore a different one.

If you are really interested in observing and learning about snakes, it is a good idea to get one. Some people have snakes as pets just because they like to be different, and they are not as concerned with the snake as they are with themselves. This is not a particularly good reason for keeping snakes.

Snakes do have one advantage over warm-blooded pets. They do not demand such constant care. With proper housing kept clean and at the right temperature, with proper food and water supplies, they can be left alone much of the time.
